How to Replace a Laptop Screen: Step-by-Step Guide

Published Jun 22, 2026By YUCHI LCD

Replacing a laptop screen is one of the most common — and most rewarding — laptop repairs. With the right replacement panel and a little care, most people can do it in 30–60 minutes. This step-by-step guide walks through the process for a standard non-touch laptop. (For touch and convertible models the assembly differs — ask us first.)

Before you start: get the right panel

The repair only succeeds if the replacement matches your original. Confirm size, resolution, connector/pin count, mounting and touch type before ordering — see how to find your screen model number. Ordering the wrong connector is the single most common mistake.

Tools you’ll need

  • A plastic pry tool or guitar pick (to lift the bezel without scratching)
  • A small Phillips screwdriver
  • Tweezers
  • A small dish or magnetic mat for screws
  • Optional: an anti-static wrist strap

Step-by-step

  1. Power down and disconnect. Shut the laptop off, unplug the charger, and if possible disconnect the internal battery. Working on a live screen circuit can damage the new panel.
  2. Remove the bezel. On laptops with a bezel, pop off any rubber screw covers, remove the screws, then gently work the plastic frame loose with a pry tool, starting from a bottom corner. Many slim modern laptops are bezel-less — the panel is glued/clipped at the edges instead.
  3. Free the panel. The panel is usually held by 2–4 screws on each side bracket, or by adhesive on bezel-less designs. Remove the screws (or warm and lift the adhesive carefully) and tilt the panel forward onto the keyboard. Don’t pull — the cable is still attached.
  4. Disconnect the cable. On the back of the panel there’s a tape-secured connector. Peel back the tape and gently unplug the eDP/LVDS cable. Note its orientation.
  5. Connect the new panel. Plug the cable into the new panel firmly and re-secure the tape. Match the connector position to your old panel.
  6. Test before sealing. Reconnect the battery and power on before you screw everything back. A black image now is far easier to fix than after reassembly. You should see your desktop.
  7. Reassemble. Re-seat the panel, refit the brackets/screws or adhesive, then clip the bezel back on.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause
Screen stays black Cable not fully seated, or wrong connector/pin count
Distorted / flickering image Loose cable, or panel resolution not supported by the laptop
Backlight on but no image Incompatible panel — check it matches your original spec
Touch not working Ordered non-touch panel for a touch laptop

Most of these trace back to a mismatch — which is why confirming the spec before you buy matters so much. See our guides on connectors and touch vs non-touch.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is it to replace a laptop screen yourself?

For most laptops it is a 20 to 40 minute job with basic tools, a plastic pry tool and a small screwdriver. The hardest parts are getting an exact-matching panel and disconnecting the delicate cable. Gaming and touch laptops can be trickier.

What tools do I need to replace a laptop screen?

A plastic pry tool or spudger to lift the bezel, a small Phillips screwdriver, and some tape. Work on a clean surface, disconnect the battery first, and handle the eDP or LVDS cable gently because it is the most fragile part of the job.

My new laptop screen is black or flickering, why?

Usually a loose or wrong cable connection, or a mismatched panel with the wrong resolution or pin count. Reseat the connector first. If it persists, verify the panel model exactly matches the original's size, resolution, connector and pin count.
