Laptop Screen Connectors Explained: eDP vs LVDS, 30-Pin vs 40-Pin

The connector is the number-one reason a “correct size, correct resolution” laptop screen still doesn’t work. A 15.6″ FHD panel with the wrong connector simply will not plug into your cable — or worse, plugs in but stays dark. This guide explains eDP vs LVDS and the difference between 30-pin and 40-pin connectors so you can order a panel that actually fits.

eDP vs LVDS: the two interface generations

LVDS (Low-Voltage Differential Signaling) is the older interface, common on laptops up to roughly 2013–2014. LVDS panels usually have a wide connector and are mostly HD (1366×768) or HD+ resolution.

eDP (embedded DisplayPort) replaced LVDS and is the standard on virtually all modern laptops. It carries more bandwidth in fewer wires, which is what makes FHD, 2K, 4K and high-refresh panels possible. eDP connectors are physically smaller than LVDS.

The two are not interchangeable. An eDP panel will not work on an LVDS cable and vice versa, even if size and resolution match.

30-pin vs 40-pin eDP: what the pin count means

Within eDP, the most common connectors are 30-pin and 40-pin. The rule of thumb:

eDP 40-pin High-refresh (120/144/165/240Hz) and many 2K/gaming panels; some add touch or extra control lines

The extra pins on a 40-pin connector usually carry the higher bandwidth and control signals needed for high refresh rates or touch. So a 144Hz gaming panel is almost always 40-pin, while a plain 60Hz office screen is usually 30-pin. You cannot make a 30-pin cable drive a 40-pin panel by adapter — match the pin count exactly.

Connector position also matters

Even with the right interface and pin count, the connector’s position on the panel (left, right, or center on the back) must match where your laptop’s cable reaches. A panel with the socket on the wrong side may not allow the cable to seat, or will strain it.

How to identify your connector

  1. Detach your old panel and look at the connector — count the pins or photograph it.
  2. Read the panel model code on the back; the version suffix often encodes the connector (see our guide on finding your screen model number).
