Can You Upgrade a Laptop to a 144Hz Screen? Compatibility Guide

One of the most common questions repair shops and laptop owners ask is whether a 60Hz laptop can be upgraded to a smoother 120Hz or 144Hz screen just by swapping the panel. Sometimes you can — but it depends on three things inside your laptop, not just the new screen. Here is how to check before you buy.

The short answer

A high-refresh upgrade works only if your laptop’s connector, internal cable and motherboard can all carry the extra data a 144Hz panel needs. A 144Hz panel pushes more than twice the data of a 60Hz one, so a laptop built only for 60Hz often cannot drive it — even though the new screen will physically fit. Check all three points below first.

1. The connector and pin count

This is the most common blocker. Standard 60Hz Full HD laptop panels usually use a 30-pin eDP connector. High-refresh 120Hz and 144Hz panels almost always use 40-pin eDP, because the extra pins carry the additional video lanes. A 40-pin panel will not plug into a 30-pin socket, and a 30-pin laptop cable cannot feed a 144Hz panel.

So step one is to read the connector on your current panel. If your laptop already shipped with a 40-pin eDP cable, your odds of a successful upgrade are much higher. 2. The internal video cable

Even on laptops that support high refresh, the specific unit you own may have shipped with a cheaper 30-pin cable for its base 60Hz configuration. In that case you would also need to replace the eDP cable with the 40-pin version your laptop’s higher trims used. Gaming laptops (Lenovo Legion, ASUS ROG and TUF, Acer Nitro) are the most common candidates because the same chassis was often sold in both 60Hz and 144Hz versions.

3. The motherboard and BIOS

Finally, the motherboard’s display controller and the BIOS have to accept the higher refresh rate. Many modern laptops auto-detect the eDP panel and simply expose 144Hz once a compatible panel and cable are installed. Some, however, are locked to the resolution and refresh rate they were sold with. There is no universal rule — this is why we always recommend confirming your exact laptop model and trim before ordering.

How to check your laptop before buying

  • Read the model code on the back of your current panel and look up its connector and refresh rate.
  • Check whether your exact laptop model was ever sold in a 120Hz or 144Hz version — if it was, the chassis and board usually support it.
  • Confirm whether you also need the 40-pin eDP cable for that trim.
